WE CAN SEE THROUGH THE MACHINES

I am very pleased to announce I've finished the first "readable" draft of my tenth novel, We Can See Through the Machines. The first rought draft was finished about a month ago on 2/24/09. It is the 7th novel in the Incarnations of the Americas series- all of which I hope to release by the end of the year.

Before the big 7 book re-edit- I am going to be turning my short story trilogy "Kenny G Must Die" into a short novel- probably about 75,000 words or so. It will expand and change the storyline a bit with much more details about the oddly familiar world of Aliester Crewley- data entry engineer by day, powerful sorcerer by night.

The Darkness and the Light- Election Day 2008 in America

The election went down- the most historic electoral event of my lifetime. Barack Obama was elected President of the United States.

Like millions of others, I don’t know what the future brings. But, for the first time in eight very long, very hard to deal with years- I feel hope.

I listened to a woman talking today at my job- I work in a hospital- she was talking about the difference between hopes and wishes.

Her name is Dr. Dr. works with the parents of dying children. She told the story of a girl in a wheelchair- dying of cancer- eight days after this conversation, the girl was dead.

As part of her research, Dr. asked the girl, “What are you hoping for?”

The girl answered, “I’m hoping I’ll get up and I’ll be able to dance around, that my legs will carry me again and I’ll be able to fly through the air like a bird. All my friends and family will be able to sit in a theatre and watch me while I dance good enough to make Baryshnikov blush.”

The girl stopped. She considered for a moment. She said. “You know what, that’s not what I hope. That’s what I wish. There’s a difference you know. A wish is something I want to happen that’s impossible in the world as it is.”

She paused, and then continued, “In the world as it is... I’m going to die. But in the world as it could be- I can dance- my legs are strong- I’m going to get better. But that’s just a wish. What I hope for- what I think is possible- in the world as it is- is that I will feel less pain and be able to sleep better.”

Hope and wishes are different. Hope is real, wishes are not. You hope for things in the world as it is. Wishes require the world to become something new.

That’s the truly astounding thing about democracy- what makes it the greatest system humans have yet invented to govern themselves.

With a single collective action we turned a wish into a hope- a political alchemy of the most profound sort. With a single ballot we turned our backs on the past 8 years and as President Elect Obama said in his nomination speech, “Enough.”

We really are incredibly lucky to have such an opportunity. Literally billions have died without it over the years.

We could say, we demand an end to the Iraq war. We want tax relief to someone who isn’t rich or have Inc. at the end of their name. How about some Supreme Court nominees who’ve actually read the Constitution, or at least care what it says.

Before November 4th- these things were wishes. The world where they happened was impossible. Universal healthcare was as likely during the Bush administration as the Banks being able to regulate themselves without causing an economic meltdown. Or leprechauns.

But now, just like that, because of the mysterious brilliance of the simple collective will of a people, these impossible things, these wishes, are hopes again. I suddenly live in a world where my country doesn’t believe in wars without cause- or torture- or extreme rendition- or the philosophy that says the rich should see all of the spoils for the simple act of being rich. I live in America again, a place I can hope. And it’s all because of democracy.

But all things have a flipside- the Tao shows us that. Things are dual natured. Even democracy. Even wishes and hopes.

Because on the same day we did this wonderful thing, electing Barack Obama, in that same breath in the state of California- a single vote turned a hope back into a wish for an entire group of people. Like Cinderella at midnight, the protection of equal rights for homosexuals turned back into a pumpkin. People who were married- married- legally- in front of a justice of the peace. Now, magically, these people are no longer married. Human beings choosing to dedicate their lives to each other are banned because people think it’s icky or because they think it’s a sin. It’s disgusting. And yet, it too is democracy.

All of the rights that go along with marriage- stolen- mostly because of Mormon carpetbaggers and people who think the earth is 6,000 years old. While one wound healed, we tore one open a new one, fresh. Banning a right you’ve not yet granted is appalling enough (as they did – banning gay marriage in 2 other states), but giving a right, and then taking it away- that’s almost worse. That’s coldness and cynicism on a level even I, a cynical person, can only look at with utter astonishment.

There is no doubt in my mind in 20 years, maybe more, hopefully much less, society will look at what happened in California in horror. And there’s also no doubt in my mind some new group of people will be the new boogeyman- the new thing for the fearful to see going bump in the night. It seems there’s a never ending supply of things to be afraid of- but

But, as long as democracy keeps working, it means we’ll get another chance next time. Society will have time to heal, and to learn, and there will be another vote. Let’s not take 300 years this time though, okay?

Sarah Palin on SNL

I just watched the clips of Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live and I'm just sorta stunned. It wasn't playful or satirical in the normal, safe SNL sense. Instead, it was wonderfully, wonderfully, visciously mean. And Sarah just sorta went with it. I mean they shot a fuckin moose while she sat bobbing her head- yelling out Eskimos, which to my understanding, isn't what the Inuit prefer to be called anymore- that can't play well back home. They rapped (and it was all white people rapping around her- which I think was meant as another little dig) "I built a bridge and it didn't go nowhere"- meanwhile Sarah Clueless sat in the middle of it and bobbed her head. Alec Baldwin mocked her to her face and she made some lame remark about the born again Baldwin in retort. The bit Tina Fey was doing about her was as usual spot on- and again- really mean.
It should be mean, and not just because I disagree with her on the issues. It should be mean because Sarah Palin is offensive. She represents something that I find legitimately disgusting in American culture - fear of intelligence and the championing of the ignorant. Palin is offensive just as Bush is offensive. Why do the Republicans keep foisting morons into the position of the presidency? Okay, so McCain reversed the equation- just like Poppy Bush did with Danny Potatoe. It seems the Republicans think the President is the country's head cheerleader- that the decision's the President makes don't have real consequences. In other words, the Republicans don't think being President REQUIRES intelligence. She's had plenty of time to be coached- the idea this woman is going to be so close to the Presidency is horrifying- she's never gotten through a single interview where follow-up questions weren't allowed. She can repeat a talking point, but if you push, she's even less capable of presenting a rational statement than Bush is.
I realize the whole SNL thing was scripted- but wow- what were McCain's people doing letting her do that? They should've expected it- they never should've returned the calls. If they were going to let her do it they shoud've written her a part where she makes some witty intelligent comeback/explanation as to why she's not dealing with the press- at least a reference to the "Liberal media" or something- but nadda- zip- zilch. She just stood there while people made fun of her straight to her face.
Unbelivable.

Thanks alot Texas and Ohio (and to a lesser extent, Rhode Island)

(Before reading this you should know I don't really like Obama any more than I like Hillary- but I do have a strong dislike of McCain and its my concern over his being elected that prompts the following)
Well, the Democrats have managed to do it again. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. All I could do was watch and shake my head in annoyance as 2 1/2 states managed to magically overrule a 12 state winning streak in the eyes of the media. If I didn't know better, I'd think they had a stake in the horse race continuing... oh, wait.
So, since the people in Texas and Ohio are apparantly too racist to vote for Obama or at the very least too stupid to know what letting Hillary win would mean (for the primary race- if the situation was reversed and Obama was behind I'd feel the same way), the race now drags out for another month or so with both candidates turning more and more negative- while McCain continues to get himself serviced by our hooker media.
This reeks of Mondale/Hart and it makes my head hurt. The Democratic establishment is clearly afraid of Obama and they're going to crucify him- even if it means ruining either candidates chances of winning in the process. I'm not really sure what they're so worried about- it certainly isn't his positions on the issues- which means it probably goes back to the one thing that seems to rule everything in our broken democracy- the MONEY! Obama, like Dean before him, is raising money from people, not from the rich- and there's nothing the establishment hates more than ordinary people or candidates who are actually appealing to us.
And clearly Hillary doesn't give a fuck- she wants to be president and she'll flame the whole party if that's what it takes. The past few weeks has made it pretty obvious there's no limit on how far she'll go- which you'd think would worry the establishment- but it doesn't seem to- which is weird.
Anyway, prepare for months of Obama is a Muslim innuendo and watch as our prestige in the rest of the world finds an even lower opinion of us. Good job Ohioian Texans- the rubes win again!

Hunter S. Thompson 2.0

If you like the way Hunter Thompson (RIP you nutty bastard) wrote about politics, and you aren't reading Matt Taibbi- you're really missing out. Mr. Taibbi writes for Rolling Stone- Thompson's old rag- and he does just as good a job of cutting through the bullshit and laying bare the decrepit bones of American Politics. In a rare bit of corporate largesse- you can read a lot of his stuff for free on the RS website.
A link to his latest piece here. It's about the Democrats and not ending the war- telling us the soldiers have to keep dying for no reason until 2009- when presumably the country will have elected more democrats.
The final 2 paragraphs are as follows:

John McCain was just on Meet the Press talking about his immigration policy. McCain said he would "round up" the 2 MILLION illegal aliens who have committed a crime- and deport them. He said it casually, offhandedly, like, ho-hum, I'm gonna raid 2 MILLION houses and "round up" people.
Yikes.

Keep in mind this is the same guy who said he wants to be in Iraq for 100 years. No matter who wins the democratic nomination- they should play that clip, along with the one about how McCain professes an ignorance about economics. Just play them, alternating, on a loop until November.

Oh, and to anyone who's all yippy skippy about the "tax refund" checks- you're dumb.

Hillary Wins

Oh well, that's the problem with prognostication- I was WRONG WRONG WRONG. I don't understand where Clinton's support is coming from- do people really not remember how NOT progressive the Clinton's were?
Do people really want 28 years of Clinton/Bush?
I guess everyone else was shocked too- but still- as of now- it's all wide open.
For what its worth my current guess:
Clinton vs. Guliani with Clinton winning in November. Big whoop.
We'll see.
Edwards isn't dropping out quite yet and I still very much have my fingers crossed.

Vote for Edwards!!

So here's what I see happening as of the early afternoon of January 8th, the day of the NH primary.
Barack will win- probably by as much as 10 points- which is going to hurt the Hilary campaign pretty badly- and may very well spin her out of contention- especially if she sticks to her current plan of running on the atrocious record of Bill Clinton as her "record of change."
There are certainly "centrist" democrats who look fondly back at the Clinton years, but most of look back and see a series of horrible mistakes- NAFTA, GATT, bombing aspirin factories, overseeing the creation of our "service" economy, the Telecommunications Act of 96, his "crime" bill, the total failure to make any headway on health insurance reform. Sure, none of it is as bad as what Bush has done, but it's NOT GOOD EITHER.
But Barack is really no different than Hillary. He's trying to make himself into a figure like JFK or Martin Luther King, in fact, he got a little flack on the news this morning for comparing himself to exactly those people- but what I think he doesn't understand, what I don’t think anyone understands, it that NO ONE will ever be JFK or MLK again. The reason is simple, the free ride the media used to give to people over their foibles is OVER- and has been for a couple of decades. Sure, while the whole thing is glamorous and everyone's caught up in the excitement of the horserace they'll be some overlooking- it certainly happened with Bush- but the truth is, not even JFK and MLK were JFK and MLK. Those figures were legends, like Wild Bill Hickok- they weren't people. Legends don't survive in 2008 because the media (rightly in my opinion) doesn't let them. So it's just a matter of time before the free ride ends and the media starts to point out Barack's rhetoric doesn't match his actual policies, as Clinton has been so desperately pointing out since Iowa.
I don't know if Barack really will implode, but if it happens, and I really do think it will, I really hope its sooner and not later. I don't want his eventual demolition to take place after the nomination- where the result could be something as depressing as President McCain- or god help us- President Huckafuckabee. I'd rather see the backlash start now.
Anyone who thinks the free ride will continue through November is naïve in the extreme. Believe me, there's going to be thinly veiled racism and Osama jokes galore. If Obama was a true progressive then I think he could weather the storm and keep the base- but he's not. He's a very smart, very lucky, very talented politician who can never live up to his rhetoric because the simple truth is- the Republicans will NEVER work with him. And it's not because their racist. It's because THEY DON'T WANT CHANGE!!! Why should they? They're rich, their buddies are rich. Why would they want to move the country forward when its current position is serving them so well? Every time Obama says he's going to work with both sides, he's really saying he will DO NOTHING.
There's only one candidate that understands this with a viable shot to win- John Edwards.
Edwards is telling it straight- if we want change, we need to elect someone who is fully aware going in that EVERY SINGLE PROGRESSIVE VICTORY IS GOING TO BE A BATTLE ROYALE IN A DIRTY FIGHT THAT IS GOING TO REQUIRE BITING, KICKING, AND PROBABLY A LITTLE CHEATING.
We need a fighter, not a uniter. Don't you remember? Bush was a uniter not a divider and look how that turned out. The problem is, I think Obama is being honest when he says it- which tells me he's not fit to serve. We need a guy who's going to take all of Bush's executive power and use it with the same intensity for good as Bush used it for evil. We need a guy who's willing to go straight at corporations, the media, and lobbyists. Someone who isn't afraid to force the hand of what will surely be a democratic congress. Edwards is talking like a man who knows exactly what he's up against and he's itching for a fight. Never mind pretty words, fighting words are what warms my heart and gives me the kind of hope no amount of rhetorical flourish from Obama can.

ANOTHER BOOK DONE!!!!

I just finished my 8th book today, the first day of 2008 after driving home from a New Years Party- there's a blizzard outside and I finished with a nice view of the snow covering the trees in my front yard. The book is called Bang and is another volume in the Incarnations of the Americas series.
This book is really exciting for me because it was while I wrote this book that I really started getting into comics- and seeing how certain aspects of comic universes could be adopted into the novels I'm writing (and written) in ways I've never come across anywhere in fiction. I'm now going to embark on a big project, recording all of my books as audiobooks and making some detail changes to incorporate my ideas.
If I can make good time, by June I hope to be able to offer paperbacks of all 6 books bundled together with my specially designed audiobooks which will finally take the text into consideration. My goal is to make switching from the text to the audio book on your Ipod extremely easy.

The Best Movies of 2007

· Zodiac- Spooky, interesting, good acting, the scene in the basement scared the hell out of me. Of all the movies I saw this year, Zodiac was the most "complete" film I saw
· Black Snake Moan- The BLUES- on celluloid. Underrated movie because no one could get past Ricci's scantily clad performance- but since when wasn't the blues sexy?
· Hot Fuzz- From the kids that brought us Shaun of the Dead- this action movie send-up was better than any of the actual big budget movies that came out this year. And it has a priest with a machine gun- what else could you ask for?
· I'm Not Here- Reinvents the Biopic. For such an arty film, infinitely watchable, interesting take on the Bob Dylan Legend. Even Cate Blanchett works even though she's doing the most obvious "impression" of Dylan- which works because she's playing him during the "amphetamine daze" days- and isn't every junkie a parody of themselves?
· I Am Legend- Fraught with weaknesses on its face- The more time that passes the richer the allegory becomes in my mind. Cancer as Communism, Cure as Al Queda, Will Smith as the US and the dog as the innocent bystander.
· The Simpsons- Finally, on the big screen and as chock full of gags as the best of the TV episodes.
· The Bourne Ultimatum- Genius trilogy- action the way it should be done and seldom is.
· Superbad/Knocked Up- Both movies by Judd Apatow made me laugh until I nearly peed.
· Harry Potter- A franchise that manages to get better each movie. The horrible woman that play Umbridge deserves an Oscar- just looking at her makes you want to punch her in the nose. Hrmph indeed.
· Ratatouie- A great movie about a foodie rat- who woulda thought? Brad Bird is a genius with a visual style that just makes you shake your head with its richness.
· Dan in Real Life- FINALLY a love story where people I'm supposed to care about don't cheat on their spouses- I can't stand the "romantic comedies" where you're supposed to excuse the main characters infidelity just because their spouse is portrayed as a lout.
· The Last Mimzy- A kid's movie for smart kids- FINALLY!
· 2nd Half of DeathProof- First half is boring even though Kurt Russel is clearly having a great time- the stunt work in the second half is some of the best I've ever seen in any movie ever- I don't know how the stuntwoman stayed on that car!
· Ocean's 13- Makes the list just for the scenes in the Mexican Dice Factory and the unforgettable line, "The nose plays"
· Sicko- Michael Moore, as usual, picking them up and knocking them down. Maybe a bit of an easy target considering the need to bring attention to less known problems.
· Talk To Me- I really like the way they portrayed the riots after MLK's assassination- Don Cheadle was great.

Battlestar Galactica Theory- Post Razor

Assumptions
· The "Old School Cylons" are the creators of the final 5
· The Old School Cylons were split off from the rest of the Cylons (as shown in Sodes and explained by Athena) for 40 years. During this time they were doing their own thing in their own time and they developed the final 5 and sent them out way earlier than the remaining "skin jobs" which is how Tye could be around for so long. The regular Cylons have stories of this "lost tribe of Cylons" but they don't know much about them- which explains the mystique the Cylons have of the final 5.
· It makes sense the "skin jobs" would call the Old School Cylons an "evolutionary dead end" if they are seen as being human-centric. (And especially if they really are human-centric)
· Lee is the last of the final 5 (A highly suspect thing to hang one's hat on- but still)
· The Final 5 aren't evil- they are protecting humanity for some "hybrid" purpose that hasn't happened yet but surely has something to do with earth. We know 4 of the Final 5 have worked pretty diligently to help humans along- the whole leadership of the occupation of New Caprica was from the Final 5, etc etc.

So, take these suppositions and add the line Starbuck says about the way Lee keeps "almost getting Starbuck killed" as discussed at the very end of Razor. What if he really is trying to "neutralize" Starbuck because he's a 5 and he knows at some subconscious level Starbuck actually is going to cause some horrible downfall of humanity. What if Lee's romance with her is another attempt at dragging her away from her destiny?
So when the Hybrid offers Kendra "forgiveness" he means that by telling humans about Starbuck she'll be warning the fleet of the danger Starbuck poses- which, while not as good as killing her- at least offers humanity a chance- thus giving Kendra salvation for the harm she's caused.

Beowulf- The World of Cinema Changes Forever

As a film, Robert Zemekis's new film Beowulf is okay- maybe even a little bad. The CGI on the human characters still suffers from the "Polar Express" syndrome- instead of life-like they come across as a bit stiff and creepy and the entire film is just Talk, Fight Grendal, Naked Angelina Jolie, Talk, Fight Dragon, credits.
Still, as I sat in the theatre Friday night I could only think one thing- I'm watching the 21st century's Citizen Kane. Not because of the plot- or even because of the CGI in general. No, Beowulf is a massively important movie because of the leap forward it represents in immersive 3-D. And yes, I am fully aware of and willing to wallow in the irony of using one of the world's oldest stories as the vehicle for an unprecedented technological breakthrough.
I know IMAX has been making these 3-D movies for a while now and this summer's Harry Potter's finale was in 3-D too. But in these cases the 3-D hasn't been all that different from what they did when I was a kid. The best example was the Creature from the Black Lagoon. It was broadcast on TV and you would wear glasses you bought with a Slurpee at the 7-11.
The thing that marked these films as 3-D was a clunky process where you were basically dealing with 3 layers of field. The foreground, mid ground, and background. The foreground would be used for things suddenly sticking out at you (popular in such movies as Jaws 3-D) the mid-ground is where all the actual movement takes place, and the background was static. Even this summer's Harry Potter basically stuck to this mode- although they were able to stretch out the mid-ground by using the stark black, silver, and blue color palette of the Ministry of Magic.
Beowulf is entirely different. In Beowulf, there are many more layers visible. Instead of just 3 layers of 3D- they're now able to create a full depth of field so that when you are looking into the mead-house- you are looking INTO the mead-house- each layer of tables has a 3-D appearance, all of the cups and plates and people in the room also have a 3-D appearance. There is genuine depth of field- something that has eluded every other 3D presentation I've ever seen.
But that's not all- in addition to creating these unprecedented number of visual layers, Zemekis's team has also managed to get the characters to move between these layers with stunning fluidity- especially considering the newness of this technology. The battle scenes show off this aspect the best- and indeed- the film glories in them. There are five or six shots where Grendel takes a hapless soldier and hurls him from the background into the foreground- just to see the effect at work. The dragon fight at the climax also features stunning examples of such transitions.
Beowulf is good enough that you can begin to see the potential of such a technology. More than anything it makes my mouth salivate for James Cameron's Avatar and the first time Pixar steps into the realm of digital 3D.
Sure there are flaws to the process visible in Beowulf- characters occasionally "ghosted" out where you could see thin translucent phantoms on the screen- and some of the transitions were clumsy- but overall it looked fantastic. I think in 50 years we'll look back on Beowulf in the way they look back on Citizen Kane or Birth of a Nation - both of which were remarkable technical achievements- despite one being a tad boring and the other being an atrocious racist screed- but still they are recognized as milestones that- once passed- you can never come back from.
Hail Beowulf- the first film in an all new generation of cinema.

QUICK LOST THEORY AFTER PONDERING THE SEASON FINALE

About the references in the newspaper article Jack was holding in the finale and the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. (WARNING: IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE DARK TOWER AND PLAN TO- PLEASE STOP READING- SPOILER ALERT!)
The very first shot in the first Season of Lost was of Jack's eye. Judging from the sudden "leap forward" in the timeline as well as the various references to altering timelines- is it possible the writers have just tipped their hats as to the final ending of the show?
In the Dark Tower Series, Roland goes through the entire adventure only to get flipped back to the beginning of the first book after it is revealed he cannot "win" the Tower without a horn that he actually lost before the narrative begins. The story of the Dark Tower is the story of Roland trying to improve/avoid/fix the mistakes of his past attempt and move closer to the goal of finally truly saving the Dark Tower. It is directly implied that Roland has been through the loop of the story told in the books several times and we, the readers, are only getting a single iteration. For instance, as the "reboot" occurs at the end of the last book, Roland's newest lifetime finds him in possession of the horn (the assumption being that he'd leared enough to come one step closer to a final resolution to his story).
I think Lost might be working on a simlilar track. Thus, it may turn out that Jack (or Kate- or really any of the characters) are trying to set the right combination of factors in motion so that everything "works out" in a way that prevents them all from looping back and starting over again? (In the Dark Tower, as in Lost, neither Roland, nor our Losties are aware this is what they are doing)
Will the last shot of Lost be the same as the first shot?

SNAFU

A little information is a dangerous thing. As such, I don't claim to have any "unique" insight into warfighting, but I've read a few books on military history, and now that I'm a little over half way into the nearly 800 page history of the Iraq War called, Cobra 2- I have to say, if we were able to "win" the war in a couple of weeks after screwing up nearly every single aspect of every single stage of the non-civil war portion of the Iraq war, I would love to see how quickly we might've won if the equipment we were using actually worked or if the people in charge knew their asses from their elbows.

The subtitle of Cobra 2 should probably be called, "Yes, I know we spend BILLIONS of dollars every year on fancy military stuff, but it's almost all total shit." The entire book is just an endless cacophony of broken everything- broken tanks, broken helicopters, broken radios, and broken plans. Nothing works properly, nothing is where it is supposed to be, and I can't tell you how many times you read the phrase "XXXX had lost control of the battle and his troops." The other most popular phrase is "XXXX couldn't get a hold of XXXX by radio or by telephone." I know war is chaotic and requires constant adaptation on the ground, but I cannot believe that it is "normal" to have so much equipment failure not caused by direct fighting.

And that is another thing. The early insurgency should've been predictable. If not before the war- certainly by the second or third day of it. Most of the battles were against Saddam's Fedayin (Too lazy to look up proper spelling) and they were wearing civilian clothes and (for the most part) driving civilian vehicles. From this account, it is clear there was never a real "war" at all. It was a counter-insurgency against an occupying army from Day 1.

The other aspect the book focuses on, planning and intelligence, also shakes out to be a comedy of errors. There's so much wrong I don't even want to get into it. Bottom line, this book should be required reading for anyone interested in the war- and interested in why it went so badly. Even at the point I'm at, half way in, it is clear that Rumsfeld is a total jackass who probably deserves jail for gross incompetence, if not war crimes.

Oh yeah, and the one other thing this book makes crystal clear- they were going to find an excuse to go to war in Iraq from the first day of Bush's presidency. If it wasn't 9-11 it would've been something else. At this point, I really cannot take anyone who says otherwise seriously, too many people speak on record in this book to deny this simple, yet massively damning fact.

DON IMUS- WHY HATING HIM SADLY MEANS YOU HAVE TO SUPPORT HIM

What is happening to Don Imus is wrong. Up front, I admit, I have never listened to him, never watched him, don't care about him, and I was appalled at the stupidity and truly obnoxious character of his comments.
However, anyone who claims to be progressive should be appalled by the recent developments. Until MSNBC fired him from his TV simulcast (which I have never watched) I wasn't really paying attention. Then they fired him and I was shocked. If they want to slap him on the wrist for PR reasons, I understand, even if I don't agree. But you can't fire the guy for doing what he is paid to do- comment on the world around him. If you don’t like those comments (and I for one do not like his comments at all) THEN DON'T LISTEN.
What has happened to Americans that they keep needing to have this explained to them?
This is a free speech issue.
We have this thing in America. It's called free speech. It means you can say anything you want whenever you want. For example, I can say, I think George Bush is a fucking idiot. I have that right. You can say I'm a fucking idiot for thinking George Bush is a fucking idiot. You have that right too. Indeed, I would fight for your right to call me a fucking idiot.
It seems one of the thorniest issues for people to wrap their heads around is the fact that people who say things that piss you off are the first one's who's speech should be protected. In this vein, it's fine to say that Imus is a dick for what he said, but firing him for being a dick is UNACCEPTABLE in a free country. This man used WORDS. Not actions, words. When the President says things that are stupid, people actually die. Imus is a "shock jock" what he says has exactly ZERO effect on the real world. He said something stupid- not in the context of news reporting, but in his commentary on a show that is (ostensibly), meant to be funny. Now he's out of a job for saying the same dumbass kind of thing that might've garnered universal laughter if it was said by Dave Chappelle.
Imus has the right to say what he wants and we have the right not to listen. If people are turned off by him, and his ratings plummet- THEN you can fire him. That's fair. But more and more we seem to be turning to the police state mentality that says if you say anything I disagree with I will ruin your life. Normally, I often agree with the stuff that Sharpton gets upset about- police brutality, etc. But this time, he's wrong.
Return Don Imus to MSNBC so that I can continue to not watch him. Hopefully no one else will want to either and this problem can be resolved fairly.

BRILLIANT

I'm doing some research for the latest novel in the "Incarnations of the Americas" series, and I came across this fantastic culture jamming video. These guys, known as The Yes Men, do all kinds of stuff, but this one is particularly good.
One of the guys is posing as a spokesman for Dow Chemical, who owns Union Carbide, the company responsible for the Bhopal Disaster.
And yes, the new book has decided to force itself out of my head even though I've been half-heartedly been trying to work on the business end of publishing. And yes, culture jamming plays a role in the early chapters of the book. This one in particular is going to be fun because it is, essentially, the origin story of a character from Exodus Enisode, Ron Lowell.

Bush spoke today, refusing to allow his employees to testify under oath.
Unless he plans to have them lie- there's no reason to allow an interview and not allow them to speak under oath. Called it a fishing expedition. What an asshole.

Shocking- The FBI Overreaching! Ann Coulter manages to shove her foot further down her own throat.

As linked a couple of days ago, Ann "I'd like to call you Cunter" Coulter has trying to extricate herself from the shitpile she ended up in when she publicly felt the need to refer to Jon Edwards as a faggot. She says, hey, using the term "faggot" isn't a derogatory slander of gay people. It's just meant as "wussy" as if, equating a derogatory term for gays and the definition "wussy" wasn't homophobic at all- which it clearly is.
A distinction she clearly doesn't get.
Also, she's tried to clarify that she wasn't calling Jon Edwards a faggot- that if you look closely at her words, she wasn't calling him anything. Which is true- technically. But that one reminds of Talladega Nights, where Ricky Bobby says, "I said, 'with all due respect' before insulting someone- as if that phrase "I would call him X" served the purpose to say anything. So she didn't call Jon Edwards a faggot- she just wanted to- terrific. Using that logic, I wouldn’t be remiss in saying, "I'd like to call you a stupid money grubbing whore who'll say any fucking thing to get some press because I'm a lonely bitch shitheel with no soul and only the vaguest hint of an intellect- but I won't because it's not nice."

Also, The FBI is up to it's old tricks. Why does America feel more like the 70's everyday?

Which again, I don't care if the guy's a porn star, but I bet all the conservo-monkeys that have been lapping up his complaints, are once again facing what is surely, for them, a fairly ironic state of affairs. Lost- My Theory as to what's happening to Desmond

This theory comes after viewing the Desmond-Centric Episode "Flashes Before Your Eyes"

I think Desmond keeps getting caught in a series of time loops- and what we saw in the episode was him jumping from one loop to another by finally exercising his free will over the fate he'd accepted up to that point.

Loop 1
Over and over Desmond lived the loop between waking up after falling in his apartment, meeting with Mr. Widmore, deciding not to marry her, joining the military, joining the yacht race, ending up on the island, meeting the Losties and turning the key.
This loop went on for who knows how many repetitions- until he finally decided he was going to change things and ask Penny to marry him.

Transition from Loop 1 to Loop 2:
This transition starts when Desmond meets the weirdo-woman in the ring store. I think on all other occasions of the loop, Desmond almost buys the ring and then decides not to. By trying to actually buy the ring he "breaks" the loop. Maybe this has happened before- the fact the woman is there to push him back on his familiar track seems to indicate it has. But from this point onward- we know Desmond isn't going to just keep spinning his wheels in the rut he's created for himself.
After meeting the woman however, Desmond has fooled himself into thinking he's still stuck. Then, when he is in the bar the second time and he sees his soccer precognition coming true- he decides he can in fact change things. His last words before the altercation starts are exactly that- "There's still time for me to change things" Then he gets whacked in the head and his consciousness skips out of Loop 1 and pops into Loop 2.

Loop 2
Loop 2 starts with Desmond post hatch explosion and goes to some as yet revealed point in the future- probably Charlie's death. In Loop 2 new things are in the works that have never happened before (Or at least haven't happened outside of what I think is now a second loop). Penny actually finding Desmond may be part of this loop- or maybe she won't be able to actually find him again until he successfully negotiates his way through Loop 2 in the same way he couldn’t experience Loop 2 until he did Loop 1 correctly.

Why Desmond is seeing the future:
Loop 2 has probably happened to Desmond a few times and so he's saved Charlie before several times in the same way and he gets flashes of it just like he got flashes of the future when he was in Loop 1. Under this theory, every time Charlie dies- Desmond hops back to the part where he's naked next to the hatch and tries again.

But since the point of this whole plot line is to illustrate the fate vs. free will argument. I figure Desmond is going to have to keep pulling Charlie's butt out of the fire until he can click into a new Loop 3- or stop the time looping entirely.

Overhaul of www.williamhrdina.com

Whenever I finish a book I like to take a small hiatus, write a few short stories (I'm working on one about how cats and dogs are only interstellar creatures who inhabit the bodies of pets as a form of vacation and another story about a guy who discovers a group of middle-aged men that battle each other with clubs) and try to catch up on the "business" of trying to find a publisher for my writing. Since I understand the biggest difficulty in getting that first manuscript published is proving profitability- I do my best to maintain as big a profile on the web as I can manage without the use of cheating. (bots, etc.- not that I'm tech savvy enough to use them even if I had the inclination.)

In this vein, I spent the weekend overhauling my website www.williamhrdina.com a project I've been trying to get the time to accomplish for 8-9 months now. Please, go visit and take a look around. The old page was far too "busy." It was loaded with text and even I had a hard time finding things in the jumble as I went from offering just text stories, to the addition of art, then video, then audio short stories in addition to excerpts of all 6 novels without changing the format in a major way. Now every category has it's own page and I think it's much easier to use.

I still have to do a second overhaul draft on Exodus Enisode till it is in "try to find a publisher form"- so that excerpt won't bill up till April-May.

On a political note, I watched on TV this morning as the right wing noise machine again tried to hoist the old chesnut that Iraq had links to AlQueda at the exact same time they were using the administrations new "Proof" that Iran is helping the anti-occupation and civil war forces in Iraq. So see, since they didn't lie the last time, it proves they're not lying this time since they're not lying this time and therfore not lying the last time. You understand don't you?

EXODUS ENISODE FINISHED!

10 months after finishing The Music of Dreams I am happy to say I've just finished my 7th Novel, Exodus Enisode. I made a couple of video's about it, they can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=william+hrdina&search=Search
It's really terrific because this book is really a culmination of something I've been unconsciously working towards for a very long time. I've come to realize that, in a way, my novels are not totally unlike the Marvel Universe. By this, I mean I've slowly been creating the "Incarnations of the Americas" Universe. Except instead of using comic books, I'm using entire novels. Six novels (Rain, Ialtaboath, Portal, The Music of Dreams, The Clearing at the End of the Path and the still unwritten, Bang) that introduce characters who all stand up just fine on their own, but are then meshed together in Exodus Enisode. Sort of like when Spiderman and Batman show up in the same comic book together. I also see it as a novel television series in the sense you learn more about what is going on from the different complimentary storylines. I've also already had the seed ideas for the 2 novels that are going to stem out of Exodus Enisode- neither of which have a title yet- which means I have 3 more books to write (actually it'll probably be alot more than that before it's all through) along with 3 short stories I'm working on, a screenplay I plan on writing based on the comic book The Invisibles by Grant Morrison, and then there's the whole 9-to-5 job so I can eat thing. 2007 is going to be a busy year.

Once again it is Keith Olbermann who has moved me to post here, if only to once again link to a remarkable commentary he gave yesterday, on the 5th anniversary of 9-11.

WHOO HOO HOO!!

I just finished the first draft of my 6th 'alt sci-fi' novel. It's called "The Music of Dreams." I pride myself on the fact my novels don't summarize well, but the story is based on the idea of a society where Music is treated the way religion is- and different types of music are like different religious sects. The story starts out with a little girl named Sarah who's dog runs away. Sarah lives in the Bluegrass town called the Folken on an isolated island peninsula. This simple act sets her on a path to be exiled from her home with her brother and set out into the world. Sarah starts to have dreams about music unlike anything she's ever heard and she follows the path her dreams set out before her- even when it brings her great tragedy. This book is the 3rd "official" book in what I'm calling the "Incarnations of America" series. The 4th will be started after I take my requisite 2-3 week hiatus during which I plan to write a short story about this freaky photograph I have in my kitchen from a Dead show in 86 when I was 8 years old- yet you can clearly see me in the photo as I look now as a 30 year old. Even my own mother pointed me out in the picture and asked if it was taken last year. Anyway, the best part is I've got that fantastic feeling of relief and satisfaction that comes at the end of a long writing project where you finally know that your doubts you had 1/2 way through that there wasn't enough story to carry you through were wrong. I'm also amazed at how each book I write gets easier as I learn to feel comfortable in my own style.

I've just realized that the entire cycle of novels I'm currently writing are in large part a response to my use of deux ex machina through the character Rain in my first novel of the same name. It always bothered me- I wanted to know where this weird character with her big backpack and her curious ability to ward off mutual destruction with a few choice words came from. It wasn't that she was odd and powerful- it was that I didn't know how she became that way. Music of Dreams and Exodus Enisode will answer my question and take away my guilt.

Some of the people in the Blogrole make me think it might be fake- but I can't be sure. That's the best and worst thing about the world we live in these days- it's impossible to know the difference between reality and a good joke- because reality has literally become a joke.
UPDATE Okay- after giving it a closer read- I'm gonna say 99.999% it's a joke. But a damn good one. Check it out!

More fun with Miers and PlameGate

My guess that Miers is an attempt by Rove to sniggle a conservative loo-loo onto the SC was wrong (I seem to be batting zero on this Miers thing) this weekend a source in the White House said the nomination idea came from Andy Card. However, as THIS NYT's article discusses, this entire rupture apparantly stems from a strong desire by the religious nuts in this country to "come out of the political closet" and take what they see as their rightful place at the right of God, er the President. Talking in "code" is no longer going to cut it. It's a move Shrub might be willing to make, but that his handlers will never allow. This explains why so many are angry at him even though he made a special point to nod and wink every time he said that he knew "her heart." The quackers want Shrubly to come out and say, this woman will turn over Roe, appoint God head of the EPA and deport those who want to teach evolution in school. Which has led to a fantastic screw up by the profound asshole James Dobson of the ill-named, "Focus on the Family" (yea right) who has basically came out and told the world that Bush assured him that Miers is a conservative nutcase. This is the heart of the entire Bush enigma- what the hell is wrong with people that they cannot see that he DOES NOT represent any "traditional conservative values" like smaller government lower taxes for EVERYONE etc. He's a goddamn Taliban guy and always has been. He wants God to be the President and Jesus to be his Chief of Staff. Hopefully this whole debacle will wake a few of the seemingly catatonic middle road republicans- but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not going to say too much about the Plame thing yet- but it sounds like there is going to be some major happenings afoot over the next 2 weeks. Tick tock Rove- ya scumbag.

Okay, you put on your clothes, you get on the plane, you fly where you want to go.
Simple right?
Not if your t-shirt is one that criticizes his humpty-dumptedness and his handlers.
Lorrie Heasley found this out when she was thrown off a Southwest airlines plane for the horrible crime of wearing a t-shirt with Bushy/Rovey/ and Ricey with the phrase 'Meet the Fockers' or maybe 'Meet the Fuckers' (The newspaper article about the incident doesn't make it clear) but either way. "People" and by people I mean "overly sensitive morons" were offended by the shirt- and after first being told to cover it up- she was later told to take it off or get off the plane. Lorrie, being a clearly cool lady- told Southwest to focker themselves and got off the plane. Lawsuits are being filed.

Oh, and in other news, does anyone else find it remarkably convenient that there's a new "credibly sourced" threat against New York at the same time that half the Republicans in office are under investigation or indictment? I'm sure it's just ANOTHER one of those coicidences.
And speaking of under indictment- if this Fitzgerald guy doesn't indict Rove AND Libby he sucks. You don't have to be a genius to figure out that BOTH men popping up as sources for the story pretty well rules out the possibility that they didn't know they were outing a CIA agent- you have to be pretty fucking dim to believe that version of events. Man I hope they both go down. That would be an event worth having a couple of drinks about.

The OIL COMPANIES haven't built any new refineries since the 70's!!! I need a new house- does that mean the US should build me a new house? The greedy bastards have sucked up every cent of profit for 30 years putting no money back into their companies except for exploration so they could claim more of the gold under the earth for themselves. Okay, I take back my earlier ridicule. In retrospect it is quickly becoming apparant that Harriet Miers was yet another master move by the remarkably evil Karl Rove. Really, you gotta love the guy.
Whenever Bush talks about Miers he has that little kid with a secret look on his face as he insists that he "knows her heart." He had a similar look in in his eye when he talked about not having plans to attack Iraq. You can almost hear him thinking "wink wink nudge nudge"
Something makes me think that Stealth Conservative might be quite a bit of an understatement. I bet she's told him point blank that she'll do all kinds of nutty shit- not that either of them will admit it. Lawyer-client privilege.
If this is a Rove plot- and in this world turned upside down- nothing can ever be known for sure- then having the "base" express outrage at her nomination was a brilliant piece of political propaganda. If the winguts are angry- why on earth should we worry about her?
But think about it- this woman is (as of now) looking about 95% to be confirmed (I take back what I said about her joining the Bork Squad) and we know NOTHING about her- not really. And we won't either. We don't have a clue about John Roberts either- and he's already Chief Justice- that's 2 wildcards who's ideology we won't know until it's too late.
She went to a crappy law school, ran a lottery board- sat on a city council for one term- got into Shrub's pocket and now she's going into the Supreme Court. Instead of being a laughing stock she's got a good shot.
Rove- you truly are an evil genius- even if you end up in jail for the Plame thing you'll have succeeding in sucking up our country for the next 20 years at least- You fuckin' suck.

“Giving all honor, thanks and praises to God for courage and wisdom, this is a very important rally. I'd like to thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts, feelings and concerns regarding a tremendous problem that we are currently facing. This problem is universal, transcending race, economic background, religion, and culture, and this problem is none other than the current administration which has set up shop in the White House.
In fact, I'd like to take some of these cats on a field trip. I want to get big yellow buses with no air conditioner and no seatbelts and round up Bill O'Reilly, Pat Buchanan, Trent Lott, Sean Hannity, Dick Cheney, Jeb Bush, Bush Jr. and Bush Sr., John Ashcroft, Giuliani, Ed Gillespie, Katherine Harris, that little bow-tied Tucker Carlson and any other right-wing conservative Republicans I can think of, and take them all on a trip to the ‘hood. I’d tell them no child shall be left behind, then take more money out of their schools, tell them to show and prove themselves on standardized exams testing their knowledge on things that they haven’t been taught, and then I’d call them inferior.
I’d soak into their interior notions of endless possibilities. I’d paint pictures of assisted productivity if they only agreed to be all they can be, dress them up with fatigues and boots with promises of pots of gold at the end of rainbows, free education to waste terrain on those who finish their bid. Bush Drinking Again???

So it's one of those easy litmus test stories- the kind you immediately believe even though you know there's a 99.9% chance it isn't true- just becuase it fits so well with your already well established view of a person's character. It's like if you read a story that the Wizard of Oz Cheney drinks blood- you'd go "I knew he was a vampire" even though you know full well there's no such thing as vampires.

Then there's the source of the story (Read it here) It's the National Enquirer- not the place anyone should ever go for news- but then again- they're the ones who broke the Rush Limbaugh is a pillhead story- they seem to get the scoops when it comes to substance abuse.

So the yutz might be back on the sauce- I can say with total sincerity that I hope he isn't- for his sake- but more importantly for the rest of our sakes- the world is a trult freaky place right now and we can't afford for the Pres to not be paying attention- especially this Pres who has such a limited amount of attention to give in the first place. I keep thinking about the other day when he said "More better."

Lost

I am a huge fan of this show (so far it's the best drama I've ever seen on TV- including HBO) and since my theories regarding what the hell is actually going on changes every few days and certainly every episode I thought I would try to get a snapshot of where I stand right now. Don't bother reading if you don't watch the show- it won't make much sense.

I used to be a big believer in the everyone's dead theory- but according to the message boards I've been perusing over the past few days this theory has been explicitly rejected by JJ Abrams the show's creator- so I won't explore it here even though I think it makes the most sense so far.

Forces at work-
The show seems most interested in opposites- most primarily the individual vs the group and science vs faith. Even though Jack (group/science) is the main character of the show, Locke (Individual/faith) is actually the show's center. Locke is active where Jack is passive- Locke acts while Jack waits. Locke thinks about his personal salvation as the path to the group's salvation- Jack thinks that he himself cannot be saved without acting to save the group.
So far everything that has happened on the show has been the playing out of these two opposing forces.
But things aren't so simple. Not at all.
There are also other pairings that are very interesting-
Sayid vs. Sawyer
We're not supposed to like Sawyer because he's comfortable with the fact that he's a bastard. Instead, we like Sayid- who's a bastard too- but one we feel sorry for because he's bothered by the fact that he's a bastard. Yet, if you think about these two the writers are really screwing with us... Sayid has tortured and killed a whole bunch of people (at least this is implied) while Sawyer has only killed one person that we know of and it was in an attempt at revenge that most people would understand- if not condone. But- we don't like Sawyer- why? I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Sawyer is very much in Locke's Individual camp and everyone that falls on this side of the coin is portrayed in cautious terms on the show.
There are others too- but being that I'm quickly realizing I could write a whole damn book on this subject I'm just going to switch directions and try to focus on...

WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON
The fact that nearly everyone's lives are interconnected together in one way or another in addition to Locke's insistence that the things that are happening are happening for a reason lead me to believe there is some force- whether supernatural or human- that has brought everyone together on the island. The sheer amount of coincidence we would have to swallow for there to be nothing supernatural going on makes me reject the idea that it is a human force organizing what is happening on the island. Particularly the vision Locke has of the plane and the completely accidental way they came across the hatch in the first place, and the presence on charlie's fingers of the tape with the word FATE- If we are told at any point that it's all a coincidence I will be very, very dissapointed- mostly in the writers for sheer laziness.
This is not to say that I think the whole island is magical, indeed at this point, I think the entire island was man made- probably during the 70's judging by the apparant age of the computer equipment found in the hatch. On the boards I've read an explanation that the entire island can be raised and lowered in the water- the more I think about it the more I think that's what's happening, at this point I would guess that the entire island was built as a place to experiment with different kinds of biological agents- the Others could be the the one's who were being experimented on back when the island was in use. They're immune but unable to reproduce- thus their keen interest in children. Only now I think the island is forgotten- Lost- if you will and there are other forces at work.
Still, this isn't exactly a satisfactory explanation becuase of the presence of the black rock- a ship that is clearly really old and somehow sitting in the middle of the place. Unless it used to be on the shore and the island was modified somehow to get it to go up and down- but that's pretty clumbsy. Or maybe the Black rock is the source of the disease that is being studied- the word "Quarantine," the French chics explanations about how her crew died, and the fact that Desmond gives himself an injection of some kind makes it fairly incontravertable that a disease is at play somewhere.
So what about the monsters? First, I think there are different kinds- some biological and some mechanical. The thing that grabs Locke in the Season 1 finale certainly sounded mechanical. But when Locke talks to Kate about it he says it looks like black smoke. The same balck smoke that marks the coming of the Others? I don't know. Then there's the pteradactyl (I can't spell dinosaur names) that probably killed the pilot in the pilot. Then there's whatever monster can make whole rows of trees bend- what the French chic called "the security system."
Oh, and to confuse matters worse- on the official website there is a hidden page that has a "lost" page from the Season 2 pilot where Jack gets tackled- by Jack.
Speaking of the Others- there are a few things to ponder about them. First- they have access to guns and gasoline- and boats- so I have a hard time believing that they're forced to stay on the island- if they are there they are there for a reason...

Okay enough already, I could write for hours about this- I suppose I should just break down and just start posting on the message boards.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose and the New Religious Propaganda

The New York Times reviewer of the film “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” hits the nail right on the head when he calls the movie propaganda disguised as entertainment. It seems the marketing people have finally woken up to the buckets of money represented by the “Fundamentalist Market” best embodied by Ned Flanders on the Simpsons. And judging from the fact the movie made 30 million in its first week and the early Sunday matinee I saw was half full- it’s working. But that’s not the whole story to what’s going on with this movie- there’s also a distinct element of proselytizing going on.
Let’s examine this phenomenon.
First, take the commercials. They implement the tried and true “Based on a True Story” (BOATS) maneuver, except in a new way. Instead of attempting to add a dubious realism to an otherwise badly made horror movie, like Poltergeist or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre; the BOATS in this case is used as code, telling the fundamentalists in the TV audience that this is a friendly movie.
Paranoid you say? Not when one takes BOATS in conjunction with the line in the commercial where a man says “I can’t help her. There’s no injection against the devil.”
Taken together with BOATS the marketing people for this movie are sending a clear message- this movie is taking the position that exorcism is true- that God is a fact and so if you are a fundamentalist come and get it!
Which is essentially true- that’s exactly what this movie is. Rent the movie sometime. (I cannot in good faith reccomend you actually go see it at the theatre) Notice that the prosecutor has a Hitler mustache. Notice that the entire story is told from the defendant’s point of view with literally no humanizing elements. And pay extra special attention to the final speech of the film. If you still disagree- I don’t know what else to tell you.
The second tier of the marketing campaign infuriates me instead of making me uncomfortable the way the BOATS stuff does. There’s certainly nothing wrong with getting a film to its core audience- even if they’re using code. The trailer uses every CG effect in the entire film- those distorted demon faces. This is the second head of teenage based religious propaganda- “Trick Them Into Thinking They’re Going to See Something Entertaining.” It is something that’s been growing like wild in the music world with heavy metal Bible Thumpers and Gangsta rappers for Jesus.
If you’re 15 and you watch the trailer, the movie looks like a generic horror film. This is where the true synergy comes in- teenagers are both the ones with the most disposable cash- and they also just happen to be at the age where they are deciding for themselves what their religious convictions are going to be.
So the fundamentalist right gets together with the corporate marketing whores to trick kids into going to the theatre with a multimillion dollar ad campaign. Kids think they’re going to see another variation on “The House of Wax” and what they actually get is religious propaganda that ultimately revolves around one central premise- no matter what “scientists” say- demons are real. Possession is real. Satan, the horny red devil- is real.
And only Jesus can keep us safe. Indeed, medicine will actually make you sicker.
Problem is, the only real evil involved in this whole story are those who use people’s fear and gullibility to relieve them of their hard earned money and purposely design ad campaigns to draw in kids- and then give them a double switch. The worst part is it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to learn people who put together the advertising for this movie are atheist anarchists. For the marketing folks- this whole thing is simply about money. It’s disgusting and cynical in the most corrosive way- and I’m normally no detractor of cynicism.
You can choose to pretend that the election of Bush and the rise of John Roberts to the Supreme Court aren’t connected to the release of this movie and the way that it’s being marketed- but if you do- you’re as deluded as the people sitting in front of me in the theatre who cross themselves every time the dark cloaked demon popped up on the screen. We are moving towards a world where religious myth is seen as being on par with science. It’s happened before- we call it the Dark Ages.
Oh, and as a horror movie- it’s a big sucko stinkhole car crash.

I am duty-bound to report the talk of the New Orleans warehouse district last night: there was rejoicing (well, there would have been without the curfew, but the few people I saw on the streets were excited) when the power came back on for blocks on end. Kevin Tibbles was positively jubilant on the live update edition of Nightly News that we fed to the West Coast. The mini-mart, long ago cleaned out by looters, was nonetheless bathed in light, including the empty, roped-off gas pumps. The motorcade route through the district was partially lit no more than 30 minutes before POTUS drove through. And yet last night, no more than an hour after the President departed, the lights went out. The entire area was plunged into total darkness again, to audible groans. It's enough to make some of the folks here who witnessed it... jump to certain conclusions.

Going to try to start posting again. There's so much that's happened, I feel like I'm fuckin up.
Frankly every time I think about doing this I've just kind of been overwhelmed into silence. All I can do at this point is write some snarky know-it-all bullshit without any evidence or even reasoning- at this point I can't write reasonably- if you are a person so fucking stupid that you don't see how bad things are- you're a fuckwit and I don't like you anyway.

Here's some things I know.

Georgie Boy is responsible for what happened in New Orleans. Not the storm, but what happened, (or didn't) afterwards. N.O. was my favorite American city and now it'll never be the same again- oh and it laid bare the racist /classist/nauseating underbelly of the cancer in the American soul.
Rove won't go to jail for his role in outing Valerie Plame and our stupid ass media has completely forgotten the story- morons morons morons morons.
We've lost the Iraq War- in case you're not paying attention.
The last five years are going to be looked back on as one of the lowest points in American history- mainly becuase we keeping screwing up and WE AREN'T LEARNING ANYTHING.
There is the slimmest of slim chances that what happened with the hurricaine will wake the American people out of their fear centered terror party and realize there are real things to be afraid of- the suffering of the people around them- but I seriously doubt it.

On a personal note.
I got married back on June 25 to the newly dubbed Victoria Hrdina (she's taken my atrocious name without a hyphen.) She is, as far as I'm concerned, the most wonderful woman alive. (Well duh- I married her didn't I?)
I'm gonna have my sixth novel done by Christmas- I'm really excited about this one.
I think Lost is one of the best shows that's ever been on TV.

This was my final exam for my Polysci class. I am so enamored of my answers to these questions I had to put them up.

Essay Questions

1. Outline and explain Max Weber’s Ideal bureaucracy.

1) One of my favorite oxymorons of all time is the phrase “Ideal Bureaucracy.” It’s not as good as “Intelligence Services”, but it’s close. Even the spelling of the word bureaucracy is an atrocity of language. A better term might be, Oh God I’ve been in the DMV for three hours.
Weber’s ideal bureaucracy comes from law as opposed to from God (in the form of some charismatic guy or gal who says they’ve got God’s ear) or a King. Being based on law gives Weber’s bureaucracy a consistency you don’t find in a charismatic leader or a line of Kings.
The hallmark of this is where one’s loyalties lie. In the ideal bureaucracy your loyalty is to the institution, not to the individuals that make up the institution. This way, if the charismatic leader dies or the King goes berserk, the structure of society and the way it is run remains intact. It also creates a “schema” where our courts have become so enamored of our institutions that they’ve convinced themselves corporations have individual rights and existences outside of the people making them up.
Another characteristic of this ideal bureaucracy is a stable salaried career. A paycheck. A new idea during Weber’s time, the salaried career was immediately identified as a good way of creating institutional stability.
Because bureaucracies are by their very nature immense things, Weber recognized that it would be necessary to specialize, creating niches of intelligence that work together through the policies and procedures of the institution creating a whole made up of many different individuals. This too has upsides and downsides. On the upside we can bore deeply into a thing and learn all about it’s parts. On the downside, by specializing to such a high degree people also become stupid about everything except the one thing they know all about. It also leads to a kind of metaphysical naval gazing that allows for things like what we saw in the Pentagon movie about the Bradley.
Finally, the bureaucracy’s rules have to be written down so that loopholes can be found. Oh wait, no. I meant that Weber says you write down the rules because it creates consistency. Which it does. Only it’s a rigid, stupid consistency massively lacking in common sense. “It’s not my fault, it clearly says here in paragraph 3; section 9, that I’m allowed to steal your sandwich at lunch.

2. According to Patterson, (in his book about politics and the media called "Out of Order") why is the news media not the appropriate organization to organize campaigns (e.g., be the coalition builders between candidates and voters)?

2) First and foremost because of the reasons given in answer 4; but also because the traditional role of the press is as a watchdog over the government. This is where the nickname the “4th branch of government” comes from. “The critical task of the watchdog is not to be confused with the constructive task of the coalition-builder.” Patterson argues the media had the role of coalition-builder forced up on it and because of the necessity of being a watchdog and a coalition builder, fails at both.
p. 52 puts it succinctly
A) Journalistic values and political values are at odds.
B) Journalistic values, introduce an element of random partisanship which works to the advantage of one side or another.
C) Election news serves to drive a wedge between voters and candidates.

3. Patterson argues that political parties use to be the coalition builders and now we (society) ask the news media to play this role. What, according to Patterson, brought about this change?

3) Patterson blames the foisting of elections away from parties and onto the media on the Reform Democrats of the early 70’s. They wanted a system where “the rank and file voters would be the kingmakers.” (p.33) This was opposed to the old system where the party bosses picked the candidates. Now, all the candidates would be running against one another in a free for all and it would be up to the voters to choose the candidates. Patterson argues that it became necessary for the press to step in to magnify the exposure of the candidates in order that the public learn about them.
This is inherently problematic. The press isn’t necessarily interested in politics. It certainly isn’t their reason for the press’s existence. The media is mostly about entertainment. Patterson puts it, “The party has the incentive- the possibility of acquiring political power- to give order and voice to society’s values. Its raison d’ etre is to articulate interests and to forge them into a winning coalition. The press has no such incentive and no such purpose” (P.37). I find this is questionable. I would argue the hard right attitudes of many of the hyper-rich media moguls are indeed about forging the masses of people into coalitions in political support of whatever millionaire is most looking out for their interests.

4. Define schema and then explain and discuss the two types of schemas Patterson presented in Chapter 2.

4) “A schema is a cognitive structure that a person uses when processing new information and retrieving old information. It is a mental framework the individual constructs from past experiences that helps make sense of a new situation.” In other words, a schema is the particular bias structure of an individual. It is the lens through which a reporter reports the news.
Patterson’s 2 conflict schemas:
1) Governing vs. Game
According to Patterson, governing is boring and not particularly interesting as news. Thus, the media has increasingly over time come to view election campaigns as games. The focus of media coverage is about the tactics and positions of different candidates in the “horse race” as opposed to their positions on issues. Everything they do is seen as being done as a maneuver within the game called, “Become the most powerful person on earth.”
Where I think Patterson is wrong is that those who govern no longer see the act of governing as different from the Game the reporters are covering. I understand his point, that the things you want to do to govern, change social security, etc. are not supposed to be directly linked to where a candidate stands on an issue. Patterson sees a disconnect between these things. Only I don’t think there is a disconnect anymore, even if there was one once. Lee Atwater changed governing into a game and it has been ever since. Checkmate on Dukakis was Willie Horton and that ridiculous picture of him in the tank wearing an oversized helmet. He looked like a total jackass. The last 4 Presidents have been all about whose political spin genius was better at transforming politics into a game. You win if you manipulate the media into portraying your image in the way you want to be portrayed. This image is politics now. The actual positions of politicians have no necessary relation to actual policy goals. All that matters is what we think the politician stands for. Atwater did this for Reagan and Bush I, Carville did it for Clinton, and Rove, the biggest evil genius of them all, tells Bush II when he’s allowed to sneeze.
Because of the standardized nature of stump speeches the media will focus on a gaff or the candidates overall position in the field instead of reporting that Bush once again told the crowd he was a uniter not a divider.
2) Reporters vs. voters
I agree with Patterson on this second point. The interests of the reporters (as defined by their view of the campaign as a game) have little to no relation to what the voters actually need. I think far too few voters have any real interest in the issues, they mostly want gossip and rumors, but what they need is information on the issues, whether they think it’s interesting or not.
Focusing on whether or not a candidate is winning or losing does nothing to forward our knowledge about what they will do in office. It also makes it difficult for candidates who lack the “sexy” quality the media is looking for to get any traction, which means the voters never get to find out their names, let alone their positions on issues. Dennis Kucinich vs. Al Sharpton is a perfect example. Al Sharpton got media attention because he’s charismatic and controversial, yet they ignored his progressive agenda on rebuilding US infrastructure because it wasn’t interesting. Dennis Kucinich, in my opinion the Democrat’s best candidate and the only guy who was openly and completely against the Gulf War disaster never got any attention at all from the media. Sharpton and Kucinich had very similar support numbers in the polls, but Sharpton got all the ink. (Don’t get me wrong, even Al’s ink paled in comparison to Bush’s because Bush had all of the money in 2000, and therefore was immediately the guy to beat no matter how many people voted for him in the early primaries, not even being VP trumped Bush’s War Chest.) The result being we elected the dumbest man ever to sit in the White House.

24 and torture

I want to say right out front that I watch 24, I've seen every episode of every season and I think it's a good show- exciting, interesting plot twists etc. But, this season the shows already fascist-tending politics have really gone into hyper-overdrive to a degree that very nearly has me ready to stop watching. Especially regarding one single issue- TORTURE.
I mean everybody's getting some this year. The Defense Secretary's son, women, men, Jack's girlfriends husband, CTU employees, it's like torture-fest 2005.
By this point in the season the message the show is trying to send to viewers is crystal clear. Sometimes (especially with terrorists) you need information in a timely manner so sometimes you have to torture the person to get the information quickly. On the show everyone who knows something tells- all that is necessary is an electrical cord to the chest. The one woman who was innocently tortured holds out until the mistake is discovered and she goes back to work once the torture is finished.
THe thing is- the entire idea is just innaccurate. When you're being tortured you'll say anything, it doesn't have to be the truth, it just has to be whatever will get you to stop sticking the taser against my neck and pressing the button.
Taken by itself you could say that 24's use of torture is just a plot device gone mad, but taken in combination with the Muslim Father who will kill his entire family for the cause it's clear there's an agenda being braodcast here. One that Paul Wolfawitz would like. I keep waiting for the patented 24 twist to recast what's come before- but still, I think whatever gestures the show makes will probably be too little too late. At this point I'm watching as much to boggle at the lengths fiction has to go to justify what our country is doing in real life as anything else.

Keller Williams Rules

On a musical note, I went and saw Keller Williams last night in Indianapolis. I've seen him quite a number of times (I think around a dozen now) but GODDAMN last night's second set was one of the most high energy kick-ass shows I've seen in years. He's absolutely on fire. Run don't walk to Ticketmaster and see him!!
For those that don't know, Keller is ONE guy who sings and plays bass, piano, tubes, theramin, drums and the fucking best guitar you've ever heard. He uses live looping to layer all of the above into a groove while soloing over the top on geetar. What can you say about a guy who plays original as well as covers Phish, the Bee-Gees, the Dead, Talking Heads and closes with a sing along a cappella version of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. And that was just during the second set.

Robotic Monkey Arms!!

In a story that should give pause to those who think we aren't living in the future already- scientists have rigged up a robotic arm to a monkey, attatched some electrodes into his brain, and now he can make the arm move.
Think about this for a minute.

Now tell me some more about how everyone under the age of 30 aren't potentially going to live forever. Tell me that if we were spending all the money we spend on killing eachother we couldn't have food, clothing, shelter, health care, and education for everyone on the entire planet. Tell me that the only thing holding us back isn't our imagination.

Hunter S Thompson Dies

On the laptop I wrote my first 4 novels on there were 2 pictures taped to the front. One was a picture of Samuel L Jackson from Shaft- and the other was a large black and white photo of Hunter Thompson with his signature cigarette. In many ways, it was these 2 photos that got me through on tough writing days. Thompson himself is a prominent role-model for Lance, the character in Portal.
Now, Hunter is gone.
Hunter S Thompson killed himself yesterday in what the news is saying was a self inflicted gunshot wound. All of the coverage of his death is about his books, of course Fear and Loathing in Vegas topping the list. This kind of bums me out because the HST found in those books were NOT the real man.
They were an image.
A persona as carefully crafted as a professional wrestler's. That isn't to say the man wasn't out on the edge of things, I think he was, but he was much more aware of what he was doing than people give him credit for. To see this side of him though you need to read his letters as chronicled in the two enormous volumes released over the past several years.
They reveal a very smart, very sharp guy who probably understood American Politics better than anyone except Noam Chomsky- of course the lens he was looking through was much different. (He picked out Carter and McGovern months before the mainstream journalists did. But he didn't just pick them, he knew them. Hell, from his letters he knew EVERYBODY- from Carter to McGovern to Carville to Gary Hart. Thompson was one of the people they called and wrote to.
What's funny is I'm not the kind of guy who I would think would like Thompson. What with the guns and the explosives and whatnot- I hate that shit. But through the letters it was obvious that in many ways Thompson was a bit of a wuss. (For example, he writes of his Hell's Angels beatings for years afterward.) Overcompensation is hardly a rare tactic to overcome such things.
I'm very sorry for his son Juan. I don't know if Hunter was planning his suicide or if it was a surprise, but either way, my best wishes to him for his loss.
Now, the media is going to talk about the death of an image and the man will be quietly mourned in the hearts of those of us who saw the genius in what he was doing. To some degree, no one really knew him except his family- I hope when he left he was stright with them, there is no doubt being his wife and kid wasn't easy- of the man or the image.

Iraq Elections

A quick reality check for those liberals who are giving Bush "Credit" for the elections in Iraq. Now while I of course agree the elections were a good thing- in as much as they were elections- but I still say Bush gets NO NONE NADA credit for what he did.
Why?
Well, let's use an example.
Say there's 100 people. I blow up say, 10 or maybe as many as 15 of them.
Then I take the remaining people to Disneyland.
Am I a hero?
I don't think so.
But if we didn't liberate them, they'd still be living under Saddam Hussein.
Sure, tell that to the people in Africa.
They don't have enough oil to go to Disneyland.
So until this "Freedom and Democracy" talk applies to everyone, including us in the US, that argument is a dry hump.

However, the United States has long been the primary backer of repressive governments in the Middle East and, under President Bush, military and security ties with these dictatorships has increased. It is important to note that sixteen of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, whose family dictatorship has received tens of billions of dollars worth of military hardware and security assistance from the United States since President Bush came to office. The man believed to be the lead 9/11 hijacker, Mohammed Attah, is Egyptian, whose autocratic Mubarak regime receives more than two billion dollars worth of taxpayer-provided military and economic aid annually. None of the hijackers or any prominent Al-Qaeda leader has come from Iran, Syria, Palestine, Taliban Afghanistan or Saddam’s Iraq, the countries that President Bush most commonly cites as needing greater freedom in order to support American security interests.
If President Bush was serious about promoting freedom, he would call for an immediate cessation of arms transfers and any forms of security assistance to Middle Eastern governments which do not “respect their own people and their neighbors.” He has not done so, however.
To cite just one example, there have been few greater allies of freedom than Egypt’s Saad El-Din Ibrahim and his Ibn Khaldun Center for Development Studies, and its journal Civil Society. Among the Center’s activities was monitoring elections and workshops and civic education. Unfortunately, in 2001, Egyptian authorities arrested Saladin and twenty-seven associates, shut down the Ibn Khaldun Center, and banned their journal. Despite this, U.S. aid has continued to flow to Mubarak’s corrupt dictatorship.
Finally, democracies do not necessarily respect their neighbors. Israel is an exemplary democracy (at least for its Jewish citizens), but it has maintained an oftentimes repressive occupation of its Palestinian neighbors since 1967, including widespread and ongoing violations of international humanitarian law.

True believers will be lifted out of theirclothes and transported to Heaven, where, seated next to the right handof God, they will watch their political and religious opponents sufferplagues of boils, sores, locusts and frogs during the several years oftribulation that follow.
I'm not making this up.
Like Monbiot, I've read the literature. I've reported on these people, following some of them from Texas to the WestBank. They are sincere, serious and polite as they tell you they feel called to help bring the rapture on as fulfillment of biblical prophecy.That's why they have declared solidarity with Israel and the Jewish settlements and backed up their support with money and volunteers. It's why the invasion of Iraq for them was a warm-up act, predicted in the Book of Revelations where four angels "which are bound in the great river Euphrates will be released to slay the third part of man." A war with Islam in the Middle East is not something to be feared but welcomed- an essential conflagration on the road to redemption. The last time I Googled it, the rapture index stood at 144 - just one point below thecritical threshold when the whole thing will blow, the son of God will return, the righteous will enter Heaven and sinners will be condemned toeternal hellfire.
So what does this mean for public policy and the environment? Go toGrist to read a remarkable work of reporting by the journalist GlennScherer - "The Road to Environmental Apocalypse." Read it and you will see how millions of Christian fundamentalists may believe that environmental destruction is not only to be disregarded but actually welcomed - even hastened - as a sign of the coming apocalypse. As Grist makes clear, we're not talking about a handful of fringe lawmakers who hold or are beholden to these beliefs. Nearly half theU.S. Congress before the recent election - 231 legislators in total andmore since the election - are backed by the religious right.
Forty-five senators and 186 members of the 108th Congress earned 80 to100 percent approval ratings from the three most influential Christian right advocacy groups. They include Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, Assistant Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Conference Chair RickSantorum of Pennsylvania, Policy Chair Jon Kyl of Arizona, House SpeakerDennis Hastert and Majority Whip Roy Blunt. The only Democrat to score100 percent with the Christian coalition was Sen. Zell Miller ofGeorgia, who recently quoted from the biblical book of Amos on the Senate floor: "The days will come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will senda famine in the land." He seemed to be relishing the thought. And why not? There's a constituency for it. A 2002 Time-CNN poll foundthat 59 percent of Americans believe that the prophecies found in the book of Revelations are going to come true. Nearly one-quarter think theBible predicted the 9/11 attacks. Drive across the country with your radio tuned to the more than 1,600 Christian radio stations, or in themotel turn on some of the 250 Christian TV stations, and you can hear some of this end-time gospel. And you will come to understand why peopleunder the spell of such potent prophecies cannot be expected, as Grist puts it, "to worry about the environment. Why care about the earth, when the droughts, floods, famine and pestilence brought by ecological collapse are signs of the apocalypse foretold in the Bible? Why careabout global climate change when you and yours will be rescued in therapture? And why care about converting from oil to solar when the same God whoperformed the miracle of the loaves and fishes can whip up a few billion barrels of light crude with a word?"Because these people believe that until Christ does return, the Lordwill provide.
One of their texts is a high school history book,"America's Providential History." You'll find there these words: "Thesecular or socialist has a limited-resource mentality and views the world as a pie ... that needs to be cut up so everyone can get a piece."However, "[t]he Christian knows that the potential in God is unlimited and that there is no shortage of resources in God's earth ... while many secularists view the world as overpopulated, Christians know that God has made the earth sufficiently large with plenty of resources to accommodate all of the people."No wonder Karl Rove goes around the White House whistling that militant hymn, "Onward Christian Soldiers."

Now I am not so sure.It's not that I don't want to believe that - it's just that I read the news and connect the dots.I read that the administrator of the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency has declared the election a mandate for President Bush on the environment. This for an administration: That wants to rewrite the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and theEndangered Species Act protecting rare plant and animal species and their habitats, as well as the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires the government to judge beforehand whether actions might damage natural resources. That wants to relax pollution limits for ozone; eliminate vehicletailpipe inspections, and ease pollution standards for cars,sport-utility vehicles and diesel-powered big trucks and heavyequipment. That wants a new international audit law to allow corporations to keep certain information about environmental problems secret from the public.That wants to drop all its new-source review suits against polluting,coal-fired power plants and weaken consent decrees reached earlier withcoal companies. That wants to open the Arctic [National] Wildlife Refugeto drilling and increase drilling in Padre Island National Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world and the last great coastal wild land in America.
I read the news just this week and learned how the Environmental Protection Agency had planned to spend $9 million - $2 million of it from the administration's friends at the American Chemistry Council - to pay poor families to continue to use pesticides in their homes. These pesticides have been linked to neurological damage in children, but instead of ordering an end to their use, the government and the industry were going to offer the families $970 each, as well as a camcorder and children's clothing, to serve as guinea pigs for the study. I read all this in the news. I read the news just last night and learned that the administration's friends at the International Policy Network, which is supported by ExxonMobil and others of like mind, have issued a new report that climate change is "a myth, sea levels are not rising" [and] scientists who believe catastrophe is possible are "an embarrassment."I not only read the news but the fine print of the recent appropriations bill passed by Congress, with the obscure (and obscene) riders attached to it: a clause removing all endangered species protections from pesticides; language prohibiting judicial review for a forest in Oregon;a waiver of environmental review for grazing permits on public lands; a rider pressed by developers to weaken protection for crucial habitats inCalifornia. I read all this and look up at the pictures on my desk, next to the computer - pictures of my grandchildren. I see the future looking backat me from those photographs and I say, "Father, forgive us, for we knownot what we do." And then I am stopped short by the thought: "That's not right. We do know what we are doing. We are stealing their future. Betraying their trust. Despoiling their world."
And I ask myself: Why?
Is it because we don't care? Because we are greedy? Because we have lost our capacity for outrage, our ability to sustain indignation at injustice? What has happened to our moral imagination?On the heath Lear asks Gloucester: "How do you see the world?" And Gloucester, who is blind, answers: "I see it feelingly.'"I see it feelingly.
The news is not good these days. I can tell you, though, that as a journalist I know the news is never the end of the story. The news can be the truth that sets us free - not only to feel but to fight for the future we want. And the will to fight is the antidote to despair, the cure for cynicism, and the answer to those faces looking back at me from those photographs on my desk. What we need is what the ancientIsraelites called hochma - the science of the heart ... the capacity tosee, to feel and then to act as if the future depended on you.
Believe me, it does.

And the propaganda is very evident right in these articles. You can even write the commentary now: We just have to do it because we have to accomplish our mission of bringing democracy to Iraq. If they have an elected government that doesn’t understand that, well, what can we do with these dumb Arabs, you know? Actually that’s very common because look, after all, the U.S. has overthrown democracy after democracy, because the people don’t understand. They follow the wrong course."

He's saying (as I read him) that a "democratic" Iraq will do things we cannot let them do, so what we have to do is give them the government we think they should have. i.e. one that will keep US interests at heart. We won't stand for anything less.

U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam's presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting.
According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong.
....A successful election has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam. The election was the culmination of a constitutional development that began in January, 1966, to which President Johnson gave his personal commitment when he met Premier Ky and General Thieu, the chief of state, in Honolulu in February.
The purpose of the voting was to give legitimacy to the Saigon Government, which has been founded only on coups and power plays since November, 1963, when President Ngo Dinh Deim was overthrown by a military junta.

I'm glad the Iraqis voted. I just don't think it matters very much. They voted for Saddam too. 104% in the last "election." In the end, I'm not sure if this was any different. Sure, our guys were there to protect the Iraqis from the other Iraqis, but they still saw American soldiers standing around everywhere with guns. Just like when they voted for Saddam. I'm not saying it's the same- I don't think it is at all, but in terms of perception... I just don't know. I heard on NPR that the US media, reporting so authoratatively on the election, wasn't allowed to see the voting- a block outside the green zone. The sole source of the "positive" signs in Iraq are coming from the military. Grain of salt people, that's all I'm saying.

Seymour Hersh ran a very frightening article for the New Yorker this week that lays out what he sees as Dubya's long term military plan.
It seems Iran is our next target- and if it's not, the Dubya Crew is trying hard to make it look like it's going to be. The plan, according Mr. Hersh, is for our lack of support cause to the EU's attempt at negotiations to fail. This will bring the issue into the UN. We try to pass sanctions, a move that will be vetoed by either China or Russia. Then, saying we have no choice, we bomb the shit out certain areas, destabilizing the country. This will cause the people in Iran to rise up and fight for a western style democracy.
What a bunch of idiots.

The Pentagon wants autonomous control of "secret ops" teams outside the oversight of anyone but Dubya himself.
Anyone who remembers Iran/Contra should be gettting a stomach ache at the previous sentence. This is exactly how that debacle happened- removal of Congressional oversight of Pentagon secret ops. And now we're setting things up for a reprise. Ugh.
This year is giving me a headache.

The Process of Writing.

One question people ask writers all the time is, "How do you come up with the ideas?" It's a question all writers are uncomfortable with not because we get asked it all the time, but because I don't think the bulk of us know how to answer the question. It's not that we're being cagey- It's just really hard to describe- even for people who describe things for a living.
I'm working on my 6th novel right now. It's still pretty early on in terms of a novel- 10,000 words (Most novels are 90-135,000 when they're finished.) but it's at this point the idea you hope will end up being a novel actually does, or doesn't, take on a life of it's own.

This novel started as a dream and a phrase. "Inside and outside." The dream was vague, a variation on the film The Game directed by Fight Club Director guy where I, in the dream, did something bad that wasn't what I thought it was. I sat with this for a while ( a week or two) , then just before Christmas I had the image of this kid waiting for a train. He's going somewhere fun, but this guy sitting next to him is bothering him. That was it. No details. I go down to Florida for a relaxing vacation. When I get back, I know the kid meets the other main character in this train station- but I don't know who the other main character is.

When I write, it's like I'm watching a movie inside my head. The entire scene is just there in the mind's eye and you try to describe as best as you can what you're seeing. It's like a 3-d moive though- you can go into the charaters and know their thoughts or feelings at any given moment, rewind and replay the same thing from multiple angles.

But here's where it gets tricky- at the best moments, I in no way feel like I'm writing WHAT is happening, I'm only writing HOW I'm seeing what is happening on it's own. It's like watching a thriller where you are absolutely guessing and rooting for what you want to have happen, and I believe that rooting influences the story, but in the end, your just watching the movie and you find out what happens when you get there.

For instance, when I started writing my last book (Clearing at the End of the Path- 1st 3 chapters available here. ) I had a female character I was just going to have this serial killer kill in the virtual world as a way to introduce the theme of the book. Only when I started to write, that's not what happened. He didn't kill her- she killed him. The scene stayed in the book, but ended up 3/4 of the way through instead of at the beginning, and it's meaning was totally different. This girl became Molly, the main charater of the entire novel, totally changing the tenor and eventual result of the book.

I didn't mean for that to happen. I don't care how weird or "cheesily mystical" that sounds. I'm as cynical as most people, if you don't believe that, read a few old entries. Still, there are great swaths of this thing we call existing that I don't begin to claim I can understand- and while I don't understand where this writing thing comes from, I'm indescribably grateful to be able to do this thing- and I say that at a time my writing has cost me a hell of a lot more money than it's made me. Every book I hope someone will come along to help on the financial end of things, and when they don't all I can do is write another novel- the writing is the reason, the publishing is the gravy. Granted, I really like gravy.

In yet another wacky twist- Farenhiet 9-11 beats out Shrek 2 and Spiderman 2 for the People's Choice Award of the Best Movie in 2004. Sp2 and Sh2 collectively made 10X the money Farenheit did, yet F911 wins!

Energy Firms Lavish Funds on Inauguration

WASHINGTON - More than $4.5 million from the corporate world has flowed to President Bush's inauguration fund, much of it from the energy industry and some of its executives in contributions of $250,000 each.
Outside the energy sector, New Orleans Saints football team owner Tom Benson gave $50,000 and his companies gave $200,000, the fund reported Friday.
Northrop Grumman Corp., the world's largest shipbuilder and second-largest U.S. defense contractor, donated $100,000.
Michael Dell, chairman of Dell Inc., the world's largest personal computer maker, gave $250,000. So did United Technologies, maker products ranging from escalators to aircraft engines.
Investment banking firm Stephens Group Inc. of Little Rock, Ark., gave $250,000. And the education loan firm Sallie Mae gave $250,000.
Occidental Petroleum Corp., whose business stands to benefit from the president's actions concerning Libya, donated $250,000, as did Exxon Mobil, the world's largest publicly traded oil company. Exxon Mobil reported record third-quarter profits, thanks to higher prices for oil and natural gas.
In April, Bush took steps to restore normal trade and investment ties with Libya, enabling four American oil companies, including Occidental, to resume commercial activities there after an 18-year absence.
Bush's action was a reward to Moammar Gadhafi for eliminating his most destructive weapons programs.
Other donors from the energy sector included Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens, who gave $250,000; and former Enron President Richard Kinder, who left the firm five years before it collapsed and now is CEO of one of the largest energy transportation and storage companies in the country. Kinder also gave $250,000.
Energy provider Southern Co., which owns utility companies in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi, gave $250,000.
The Nuclear Energy Institute, the policy organization of the nuclear industry, gave $100,000.

Gary Webb is Dead

Gary Webb, the insanely brave reporter who linked the CIA to the South American drug trade has died of an apparent suicide. Gary was a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News when he ran a series of reports linking the Contras (a group massively funded by Reagan's CIA) to the explosion of drugs in LA in the 80's. Not surprisingly, the mainstream media tore Webb to pieces- although they failed in taking apart his story- notice the way the NY Times Obit treats him- they didn't disprove anything, and they are too cowardly to say they were the main "mainstream" newspapers who "discredited" him.
The best summary of Webb's work is actually an audio commentary track on the film BOB ROBERTS done by the guys from CounterPunch.
Webb was a brave reporter who stood and stands for everything the mainstream media is failing to do.

My Top 10 Films of 2004

1) Fahrenheit 911
Michael Moore’s latest documentary is a brilliant piece of satire that holds up to factual scrutiny far better than the media here is willing to admit. It covers the last four years in a whirlwind, from the fishy election in 2000, to 9/11, and Bush’s connection to the Saudi Royal Family, this movie cuts deep. Certainly Moore is giving his version of reality, but that’s an inherent part of filmmaking- to present a world through the lens of a director. Fahrenheit managed to beat a move by Disney to bury it, and went on to become a phenomenon. The movie works both as political propaganda and terrific filmmaking. The way Moore handles the event of 9/11 itself, with just a black screen and the screams of the people watching- was the most emotionally devastating presentations of the tragedy of 9/11 I have seen. It belies any fool who says Moore hates America. This film, and the frenzy of hatred some people have shown toward it, marks it as the cleaver splitting America in half between those who love Bush- and those who hate him.

2) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
On the other side of the spectrum comes the third, and best, of the Harry Potter movies. A better look, tighter story, and the increased acting ability of the three principle leads, Harry, Ron, and Hermione (Danielle Ratcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson respectively) make for a habitually watchable film for Potter fans of all stripes. Director Alfonso Cueron’s greatest achievement is telling a complicated story with such skill, one hardly realizes how confusing it could all potentially be. Additionally, Cueron shows the Potter movies don’t have to follow the bland, minutia obsessed style of the earlier two films.

3) Kill Bill Volume 2
Better than Volume 1, this second installment is the think-piece accompaniment to Part One’s action/gore fest. Tarantino picks up right where he left off with the Bride (Uma Thurman) on her hell-bent quest to find Bill (David Carradine). The story, while still sparse, pays off nicely in the grand finale. Uma spars with Carradine verbally instead of physically, marking an interesting contrast to the heavily physical film as a whole. The scene where Uma is buried alive by Michael Madsen, along with the interlocking story of how she is able to escape, is Tarantino at his best.

4) Hero
This movie wasn’t released in the US until this year. Zhang Yimou’s martial arts film tells the same story 3 different ways, adding depth and twists to the plot with each re-telling. Like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, this film is visually delightful and full of incredible sword play, especially by Jet Li. The thing I liked best was Yimou’s use of natural elements- water, trees, etc. The fight scene that takes place amidst a storm of yellow leaves was the most beautiful single segment I saw this year and shows CGI can be used for more than robots and space battles.

5) Dogville
Lars Van Trier’s film relies completely on the skills of his actors to carry this engrossing story about the good and bad of community, power, and individual responsibility. There is no set. Instead, the town in the Rocky Mountains where the story takes place is delineated by lines drawn on the ground and hints of set to help mark boundaries. Nicole Kidman plays a wonderfully complicated character faced with the decision whether to turn the other cheek or take an eye for an eye. Even more than its style, I found myself mulling over the ramifications of the story for days.

6) The Incredibles
Pixar’s story about superheroes who suffer all too human frailties is my favorite from the studio so far. The lush island way off in the middle of the ocean is a great touch, and the various chase scenes are fun to watch. This is the first Pixar film to use people as the main characters and I think it’s interesting that the Incredibles come off as more human than their computer counterparts in The Polar Express- even though the Incredibles are much less “photo realistic.”

7) Garden State
Surprisingly funny film about falling in love- a sort of 21st Century version of The Graduate. The biggest pleasant surprise of the year was Natalie Portman, whose charater in the movie suffers epilepsy, wasn’t forced to fake a seizure to prove some overly-melodramatic point about the tenuousness of life and the need to love. Instead the movie discusses these same themes cleverly and with great originality. Garden State is a great first effort by Zach Braff, who also starred and wrote the film.

8) Control Room
This is the film that should win the best documentary Oscar since Fahrenheit 9/11 isn’t eligible. Directed by Jehane Noujaim, Control Room documents the enormous difference between the US’s vision of itself, and the way it’s seen in the rest of the world. It mainly follows two people, an Al Jazeera senior producer and a Pentagon spokesperson who struggle to understand one another’s point of view. It’s interesting that the spokesman, Josh Rushing, has since been drummed out of the service and Al Jazeera has been banned from Iraq. A movie that I wish had been seen by more people here.

9) Spider Man 2
Another sequel better than its predecessor, this movie looked great and improved on the things the first did poorly without screwing up the things it did right. Clearly the centerpiece of a trilogy, this movie nicely sets us up for Part three, and like Return of the King- I’m actually looking forward to it.

10) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Original, strange film that stands out as the first movie Jim Carrey actually managed to act in without making a fool of himself. The way the film winds a great metaphysical premise into a story that’s really about people is what really makes it stand out.

First Draft of My 5th Novel Finished!!!

Sorry about the lack of posting- I've been on a run up to the finish of the first draft of my newest novel, "The Clearing at the End of the Path." I wrote the whole thing (@100,000 words) in a little over 4 months and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. So I guess I'll be spending another 60 bucks on stamps soon trying to find an agent smart enough to publish the thing. I've been thinking of dropping politics for a while and starting a new blog about how difficult it is to catch a break in the publishing world. The political world is so depressing right now my wife is yelling at me for being a bummer- so I guess I'll switch to something I at least have some control over and leave the political blogging to the Pros. (Or maybe not- one can never tell about these things.) I already know what the next book is going to be- it's a bit of a departure for me- but not really. I don't want to say to much about it becuase I'll invariably prove myself wrong.

Oh, the new book is about people who die and have their brains downloaded into a computer database where they can live indefinitly. I would call it metaphysical sci-fi but it has some strong thriller elements as well. It holds no relationship to the Matrix, no one (well almost no one) goes into the computer before they die- this book is more about our relationship to death, to mystery, and to each other. But it is also, as always, just a good story told to me by who or whatever tells the stories. I just work here.
